What is Web hosting?
Web hosting is a place where people store their websites.
Technically web hosting is an activity or services of providing storage space and access for websites.
A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed on the Internet. Websites are hosted or stored, on special computers called servers.
Types of Web hosting:
As technology has progressed different types of web hosting have appeared to meet the different needs of websites and customers:
Shared web hosting is the most common type of web hosting and is also the easiest to start out on.Shared hosting is a service where one server is shared among many customers.
This is typically cheaper and easier to use but less flexible. Most of the shared web hosting preferred operating system is Linux.
Dedicated server hosting is the feed for hosting. A user gets his own server and all its resources, dedicated to the user for his use and no one else. Dedicated hosting typically offers some advantages like flexibility & customization, dedicated resources and guaranteed performance, full control, more expensive.
Cloud hosting offers unlimited ability to handle high traffic or traffic spikes. Cloud hosting is essentially a meeting place halfway between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. A team of servers (called a cloud) work together to host a group of websites. This allows multiple computers to work together to handle high traffic levels or spikes for any particular website.
A VPS (virtual private server) hosting divides a server into virtual servers, where each website is like hosted on their own dedicated server, but they’re actually sharing a server with a few different other users. The users may have root access to their own virtual space and better-secured hosting environment with this type of hosting.
Types of Web hosting services:
Internet Service Providers (ISP):
An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides services accessing and using the Internet. Internet service providers may be organized in various forms, such as commercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.
Most ISP service packages include a small amount of free web space, along with tools to create and upload websites quickly and easily.
Free Web Hosting:
Free web hosting is another good option for smaller, personal websites. There are many free hosting providers that offer all types of features; some include CGI access and more.
The drawback to most free hosting services is that they are funded by advertising that appears on your site, so free web hosting so generally best for personal, rather than business, websites.
With paid hosting, you pay a fee for space and services on a web hosting provider’s server. Monthly fees can range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars. Obviously, the more you pay the more features you should have at your disposal.
Services can include CGI access, database support, ASP, e-commerce, SSL, additional space on the server, extra bandwidth, etc.
Domain hosting allows you to host your site anywhere user like: on an ISP, a free hosting service, or even your own server.
User buys a domain name and has the provider forward all requests for that domain to the actual web location. This is often less expensive than buying both the domain and the hosting service, and it allows businesses to brand their URLs.
Collocation is an option for businesses that want to run their own web servers and machines, but don’t want to have to maintain them directly.
With collocation, the website owner places its own server on the premises of its ISP or other hosts, where it is stored, maintained, and provided with an uninterrupted power supply. It provides security and protection for your server while still giving you control of your own equipment.
Direct Internet Access:
Hosting your site itself offers to user the most control over user’s web server. Companies with large data centres or that require high security in every aspect of their web and Internet access should look into this type of hosting.
So now you have the idea and knowledge about web hosting and its different types and about the various web hosting services and providers. Hope it was easy for you to understand about web hosting.
