Getting Started with Google Analytics- A step by step guide

In February 2005, Google developed & launched a free service of web analytics that tracks and reports website traffic. Today, Google Analytics is the most used web analytics service which is offered in two versions-

  1. Google Analytics 360: The version targets enterprise users.
  2. Google Analytics for Mobile Apps: A SDK (Software Development Kit) which collects data usage from iOS & Android apps.

Setting Up Google Analytics:

Step 1: 

  • First, get to the official site for Google Analytics.
  • Then, click on “SIGN UP” option in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Now, Click on “Analytics”.
  • After that, a Three-way process page for signing into Analytics will appear.
  • Click on “SIGN UP” and sign in using your current logged in Google Account.

Step 2:

  • After logging in, a new page will open requiring details of the type of services you need.
  • Click on “Website” option for integrating Google Analytics with your website or select “Mobile App” for SDK service on mobile app analytics.
  • Next, you need to provide the details such as your Account’s Name.
  • Then, provide your Website’s Name & URL.

  • Select the closely related category according to your website and business.
  • Set up your current Time-Zone.
  • Now, you have the options for Data Sharing. (Check or uncheck the boxes according to your desire of how to control your Google Analytics data).
  • After proving all these informations, Click on “Get Tracking ID” button to proceed.

Step 3:

  • Now a pop-up box will appear containing Google Analytics Terms of Service.
  • Select the Country/Region of Residence and read the Terms of Service.
  • Now click on “I Accept” button if you agree with Google Analytics’s Terms of Service.

Step 4:

  • After accepting the terms of service, a new page will open providing you with a unique Tracking ID. 
  • And, with the tracking Id, a Global Site Tag (gtag.js) tracking code for this Property will be provided by Google.
  • Now you have to copy the Website Tracking Code containing the unique Tracking ID and paste it into your website’s source code.
  • Place the script at the top of your website page, just before the </head> tag of each & every page you want to keep a track of.

  • The tracking code works as an Activation Code for Google Analytics which activates the web analytics services on your website with the particular Property ID.
  • The code creates a <script> which asynchronously starts downloading the analytics.js Javascript library.
  • It initiates a global ga function (the ga() command queue) that allows you to schedule commands once the analytics.js is ready.
  • The code adds commands to the ga() function, to create a new tracker object to track your site pages & send a page view to Google Analytics for each current page being navigated to.


Step 5:

  • Now, after pasting the tracking code in your website’s source code, Google Analytics is activated on your website on the present Property ID & now you can keep all the tracks and records for your website’s traffic informing you about Unique visitors, New & Returning Visitors and so on and so forth.
  • You can even change/edit the settings of your Account, Property & views.
  • For modifying the settings, Click on “Admin” and access the settings for your Account, Property and Views.
  • Edit the settings according to your choice of interest.
