      <img src=”SEO.jpg”, alt=”search engine optimization company India”/>

The importance of alt text in SEO:

  • Accessibility:

    Its original purpose is to describe to visitors who are unable to see or visually impaired. So alt text is needed to explain and describe to people using screen reader what is on your page.

  • For search engine:

    Search engines and other robots cannot interpret images, but images can play a crucial part in how people interpret a particular web page. So here alt tags come to play by describing what the image is showing to the search engine.When Googlebot or other search engine crawlers inspect a page, images with properly formatted alt text contribute to how the page is indexed and where it ranks.

As the Googlebot does not see the images directly, we generally concentrate on the information provided in the “alt” attribute. Feel free to supplement the “alt” attribute with “title” and other attributes if they provide value to your users! So for example, if you have an image of a puppy (these seem popular at the moment :-)) playing with a ball, you could use something like “My puppy Betsy playing with a bowling ball” as the alt-attribute for the image. If you also have a link around the image, pointing a large version of the same photo, you could use “View this image in high-resolution” as the title attribute for the link.”

Alt text is a good place to include the appropriate keyword in right place improve your search ranking for that term in search engine page.

Best Practices:

  • Keep it short:

    The text should be kept short to maximize its impact. The most screen reader cut off alt text at around 125 characters, So it’s advisable to keep it to that character count or less.

  • Be specific and accurate:

    Alt text should specifically describe the content of the image so that it shows up in relevant searches.

  • Avoid keyword stuffing:

    Do not include the keyword if they do not describe the image. Because alternative text is handled in a similar manner as regular web copy by search engines and doing this stuff not only unethical but also ineffective. So doing the keyword stuff will have the negative impact on SEO.

  • Not use the phrases like “image of”,”graphics of”:

    Alt text is referring to an image, so no need to specify these phrases in the alt text.

  • Use of longdesc tag:

    longdesc tag is used for complex images that require a longer description. It serves as a link within the image element to another page with just the description of the image on it.

Example:

<img src=”seo-company.jpg” alt=”the SEO services provided by the webomania technology ” width=”490″ height=”250″ longdesc=”SEOservices.html”>

The longdesc linked file or the page contains:
