Magento is an open-source platform, which is written in PHP. It was developed by Varian, Inc. in California and released in 2015. Now Magento 2.0 has come, with an aim to heighten user engagement, better navigation, conversion rate & overall revenue generation for store owners. It has well-developed business tools that smoothen the user experience. Various locking issues have been solved in this updated version with improved page caching for structured data.
Magento has a good security system. It has two versions i.e. Magento Community & Enterprise. The community is free version aimed at small businesses. The enterprise is paid platform aimed at medium to large businesses. The overall performance is quite impressive.
Magento Community Edition
Magento Community Edition is an open-source eCommerce platform. Here Developers can execute the core files and enlarge its functionality by adding new plug-in modules given other developers. Since the first public beta version was released in 2007, Community Edition has been improved and personalized in order to offer a basic eCommerce platform. All the Magento versions like the current release and each of the previous historical release versions of the 1.X and 2.X version branches of Magento Community Edition are available on the Magento Commerce, Inc. website for download.
Magento Enterprise Edition
Magento Enterprise Edition is extracted from the Magento Community Edition and has the same core files. But unlike Community Edition, this is not free. It has more features and functionality. This edition is mainly plot for large businesses that need technical support with installation, usage, configuration, and troubleshooting. This Enterprise edition has annual maintenance fees. But this edition doesn’t provide Hosting service. The Magento team develops Enterprise Edition by cooperating with users and third parties. Development on the 2.X branch of Magento Enterprise Edition is coordinated publicly on GitHub.
Magento Enterprise Cloud Edition
It was released on April 11, 2016. It is a platform that allows rapid deployment of fully customizable, secure and accessible web storefronts, combined with leading hosting and managed infrastructure. It contains a full REST API and a scriptable command line interface making sure integration with external systems and compatibility with existing code management works. It is a real-time content delivery network that quickly identifies speed problems and can make automated changes and also lessens DDoS attacks. It is the only edition which provides Hosting.
It had many improved & developed tools. It was announced in 2010 but the merchant version was released on 2015. It has both frontend and backend (Admin panel). Here the backend is more smoothly with a vertical menu on the left side rather than the horizontal menu on the top of Magento 1. The backend now focuses more on lifetime sales and average order, sales & revenue.

It’s very heavy with lots of features very few of which will ever be used. It is 235 MB big while platforms like Opencart uses only 30 MB.
Difficult to set-up, host & configure. Due to huge file base, some hosts limit at 30-100K files. So you have to struggle for the amounts of product you can have. It also wants a minimum of 4 GB RAM.
Not good user-friendly. Very difficult to edit the homepage. There are no quick blocks to add to view stuff on the home page. No “Latest products”, just “New products” and that you have to manually select dates.
Very costly to maintain. The premium themes have “add-ons” and lack good navigation. Some plugins are very expensive.
Over the last decade, E-commerce business has extensively succeeded around the globe and this trend is steadily expanding day by day. From a businessperson’s point of view, I would say that it is often much easier to start and own an online business as it does not require the extensive investment associated with a traditional business.
